Milton
Keynes has a rich collection of public art, including new artworks specially
created for Milton Keynes Theatre, Midsummer Place Shopping Centre, and
Xscape,
and sculptures purchased or commissioned when the new city was being
built in
the 1970s and 80s.
Two Milton Keynes Artwalks have been devised to guide visitors
the City Centre Artwalk, and the Campbell Park Artwalk.
Following the
walks you will find over 50 artworks, including sculptures by Allen Jones,
Elisabeth Frink, Michael Sandle, Eilis O'Connell and Dhruva Mistry, and
paintings
by Boyd & Evans, artists in residence in 1982-84, when the new city
was being built.
As you will see from the Artwalk maps, all walks start and finish at Milton
Keynes
Gallery. Before you start your walk, have a look at the Rupert Williamson's
Gallery
reception desk, and walk across to Milton Keynes Theatre to see wall works
by
Edward Allington, Michael Craig-Martin, Estelle Thompson, Alison Turnbull
and
Lily van der Stokker, and Janet Stoyel's stunning theatre curtain. Information
on these works can be found on the Theatre and Gallery pages.
If you are interested in exploring further afield, please see the information
on other
artworks the city centre and in Willen and Newlands Parks, all of which
are detailed
on the Artwalk maps.
A free leaflet with maps of the Artwalks is available from Milton Keynes
Gallery,
the Visitor Information Centre, the Council offices, and other city centre
outlets,
or can be downloaded from this site. A large print version of the leaflet
is also available.
A pack of 10 postcards of artworks in the Theatre and Gallery, with an essay
by
Edward Allington, is available from Milton Keynes Gallery and the Visitor
Information
Centre (price £2), and postcards of a selection of artworks are for
sale in
Milton Keynes Library.
Guided tours of the artworks in Milton Keynes can be arranged for groups
by the
Blue Badge Guides. Please telephone +44 (0)1908 253163 for details.
