When Milton Keynes Theatre and Milton Keynes Gallery were being developed,
one per cent of their capital cost was set aside for the commissioning of new
artworks.
Artist Edward Allington worked with the architects to commission artworks which
were integral to the fabric of the buildings. Artworks were commissioned for
public
areas of the theatre as well as backstage for the enjoyment of staff and visiting
performers.
The commissioning programme is entitled The Building Rendered Inside Out,
to reflect the way in which the artworks provide visual links which relate the
building to its environment.
This percent for art programme has been designed from the outset to commission
artists to make site related works which are integral to the building and which
provide
visual links relating the building to its environment. They acknowledge the
way in
which the building functions, and relate that which is public and exposed to
that
which is private and intimate. Edward Allington.
